Bloody battle ends with UWM on top
Peters walks away with record

Peters became the school’s all-time dig leader while recording her 1,604th career dig, passing Laura Dallenbach who notched 1,600 from 1998-2001.
In an exciting battle royale at the Klotsche Center, Susie Johnson’s University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team fought their way to a 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 27-25 win Tuesday night over Northern Illinois, snapping the Huskies’ five-match winning streak. NIU put up a fight against the Panthers, but UWM was able to hold on to the win, although not without a few bruises.
Leading the way for the Panthers (7-3) was senior outside hitter Becky Peters with 19 kills and 11 digs. Peters became the school’s all-time dig leader while recording her 1,604th career dig, passing Laura Dallenbach who notched 1,600 from 1998-2001. Also helping out the cause were Natalie Chery, Natalie Schmitting and Maddie Sueppel, all adding nine kills. Lauren Felsing scrapped her way to 18 digs, extending her streak to 35 straight games with double figures in digs.
The first set began slowly with both teams trading points and exchanging blows. The Huskies (7-6) then developed a lead, which they held until late in the game. The Panthers came back with excellent service and net play by Peters, bringing the score to 20-19. Game one ended with kills by Peters and Kerri Schuh, closing out at 25-22.
The Panthers started out game two much like the first, trading points with the Huskies and keeping the set close into the teens. Milwaukee struggled to find a rhythm until some great play at the net brought the Panthers back. The Huskies tied it up at 20, but five-straight points from the Panthers ended the set and gave them a 2-0 lead.
NIU would not give up without a fight. The Panthers came out strong with an 8-4 lead in the third set, but the Huskies capitalized on NIU freshman Allison McGlaughlin’s two aces to rally back and take game three 25-19. McGlaughlin recorded a team-high 18 kills in the match accompanied by 8 digs while Meagan Schoenrock trailed closely with 16 kills.
The Panthers were pushed to three different set points by the Huskies in the fourth game, but the Panthers pulled out the win even after injuries sidelined players from both teams. In an impressive dig attempt, Lauren Felsing hit her head on the floor and came up bloody early in the set, sidelining her for the rest of the match.
Later in the game, NIU setter, Amanda Tadla, hit the floor with an ankle injury. A more focused and ignited Panther team hit the court after the injury delay. With Peters supplying the kills and freshman Morgan Potter stepping up on defensive to fill the void left by Felsing, the Panthers wrapped up the match with a NIU hitting error to win 27-25.
