Welcome Brewers fans!
You are the greatest fans this side of the Atlantic Ocean
By Mike Kennedy
Never forget that you’re a Brewers fan. Is there anything better in the world?
Dear Brewers fans of the past, present and future: You’re now a member of the Fan Club. Welcome.
You’ve been heartbroken for, well, forever. It’s somewhat pathetic that when the anniversary of the 1982 Brewers comes around you continue to celebrate. But what is even more surprising is that you do it year after year even though you’re the same guy that holds up the sign that says “This is the Year” every opening day.
But this year is “the year,” simply because it’s the year for a lot of things. This could be the year the Brewers break the 26-year slump of not making the playoffs, or it could be the year that the Crew extend that eye-popping streak another year. What I’m really trying to say here is, Brewers fans: You got Hart, literally.
No other fans in the majors can claim to be as devoted to such a depressing team. Game after game you are the fans filling the seats of Miller Park, whether it is against the Pirates, Cubs or Rays. Year after year you go out and buy jerseys, foam fingers and tailgate at 11 a.m. on a Tuesday when it’s 30 degrees outside. That takes a pair.
You’re smart too. Who else would be an entrepreneur as well as a diehard fan? If you’ve ever been to a Brewers vs. Cubs game you know that you don’t go if you don’t intend to be in a fight. Brewers fans are making bank off of selling tickets to the enemy.
So what is there to look forward to as September comes to a close and the Crew get swept by the Cubs in the final three games of the season? Well, if the Mets, Phillies, Astros, Cardinals, Marlins and Cubs all fall off the face of the earth, then the Brewers will be in the playoffs for the first time in 26 seasons. However, if you’re still reading this, and I doubt you are after the first five paragraphs, then I’m telling you that there are still six games left for Sveum’s Slammers to make the playoffs, even if they lose the final three to the Cubs. They have a chance.
Will it happen? Who knows! But what I can tell you is that you’re a trooper for being a fan for as long as you have been. I know from personal experience that it is not easy being a fan of any team that isn’t from Los Angeles, New York or Boston.
But hold on strong because you will prevail. One day the stars will align and the Brewers will make it to the playoffs. Who knows how they will do when they get there, but the important thing is that there will be riots on Water Street, and who doesn’t want that? No one, that’s who.
So keep your pants on Brewers fans. Keep buying your “money over women” hats and the greatest t-shirts in the world, “The Hebrew Hammer.” But never forget that you’re a Brewers fan. Is there anything better in the world?
