Defeating the dead dorms
Ways to enjoy an on-campus weekend
By Rachel Dubinski
There are plenty of things to do around the dormitories on the weekends, including opportunities to have fun and make friends as well.
Moving into the dormitories is a huge step of freedom, yet most people who live close by and can get a ride home on the weekends snatch up every opportunity to do so. At home there are old friends, pets and a laundry machine.
Why stay on campus during those Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays?

Flicks is located just a few flights away in the Sandburg lobby. While the campus is a little empty on the weekends, take advantage of the choice seat you can have for a movie. “Iron Man” will be playing this weekend, but check back every week for the new schedule of movies.
Missing high school sports and teammates can transition into a fun weekend hobby. Try joining an intramural sport. Softball, volleyball and soccer are offered, as well as unique sports such as frisbee golf, dodgeball and badminton.
Being a part of a team can definitely branch out social circles, too. For more information or sign-ups, contact the Klotsche Center by calling (414) 229-5287.
On Fridays, there's a chance to gaze at the stars and not at the television all night. The Manfred Olson Planetarium offers fantastic and fascinating shows from 7:00 p.m. to 7:55 p.m. every Friday. Instead of listening to lectures, sit back and learn about constellations and planets, and all for only $1.
Although it's easier to do laundry at home, clothes aren't the only things that need cleaning. With a room of your own, cleaning is a necessary chore.
Vacuums, brooms, mops and irons can be checked out at the front desk of Sandburg, and there are laundry facilities in North and East towers. It may sound boring, but chatting with someone while waiting for your whites to wash can be a great opportunity to meet new friends.
Whether a roommate or the entire suite is out for the weekend, use the peace and quiet to your advantage. Study time is certainly valuable, and passing the time during a long weekend couldn't go faster when caught up in essays and readings.
If there's just too much to do and too little time during the week to do it, let the homework spill out through the weekend.
The weekend may get a little lonesome, but all activities can definitely be friends-included. Shuttle services between Kenilworth, RiverView and Sandburg are offered all weekend almost all day. Shuttle hours start early in the morning and stop running near midnight.
When questioning to go home, catch a shuttle, grab some friends and stay on campus all weekend. There's plenty of fun to be had.

Residence Halls...not dorms. The residence halls here have so much more to offer than living quarters for students attending school here at UWM. Residence Halls provide students with a place to actively learn outside of the classroom walls, create new friendships, and discover oneself. Dorms do not offer an abundance of life, but Residence Halls do.
