Kane extends perfection, Hagen extends lead

But the Panthers settle for a tie.

The No. 24 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Women’s soccer team battled the New Mexico Lobos to a 1-1 tie Friday night at the UNM Nike Classic in Albuquerque, NM. The Lobos scored early when speedy 5’2” freshman Jennifer Williams slipped through the defense and popped the ball over Panther keeper Erin Kane’s head at the 2:38 mark.

The Panthers were quick to react, however, getting the equalizer 9:51 into the match. Freshman Sarah Hagen beat UNM keeper Shannon Adragna to a through ball from Kate Megna, made a move on the keeper and pushed the ball into the back of the net to even the score.

The Panthers had plenty of chances after but just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. Both teams managed fifteen shots but the Panthers had seven shots on goal to the Lobos 4.

Milwaukee played clean and hard, forcing the lobos into fouls and gaining a 12-6 advantage in fouls along with a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Panthers nearly won the game on a corner kick in the 40th minute. Megna sent a corner kick to the far post and Hagen managed to get her head on it but the UNM keeper made a great save to keep it out of the net.

The second half proved to have far less scoring chances with each team only having one shot on goal. In overtime there continued to be little opportunity. The Panthers' best chance came in the fading moments of the second overtime when sophomore Sarah Talbert launched a shot on goal that landed right in keeper Adragna’s stomach.

The tie gives the Panther’s their first blemish of the season, dropping them to 6-0-1 while the Lobos moved to 2-1-3. The Panther’s continue play in the UNM Classic on Saturday when they take on UNLV at 11 a.m. Be sure to check out sports.uwmpost.com for full coverage of the outcome.

The Panthers get back to action on Engelmann Field on Sep. 24th when the Northwestern Wildcats come to town. The game is set for a 7 p.m. kick off so make it out to the game to see your Panthers continue to chase an undefeated season.
