A Weekend of success for the Lady Panthers

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team got their season off to a great start with a season opening 5-4 match win over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater last Thursday. The Panthers split the six singles matches and won 2 out of three double matches that gave them the overall win over the Warhawks.

The key victory in the singles set was the No. 2 ranked match that Kari Kastenholz of the Panthers took against Indrig Stensvaag.

It was a hard fought three-match set. They split the first two games and then Kastenholz won the deciding game with a tough 14-12 victory. Also, Panther freshman Megan Gow came up big in singles competition with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Jenny Woyahn. Sammi Schoen won the other singles match for the Panthers in two sets as well.

The victorious doubles teams for the Panthers were Kastenholz and Kelly Drvaric, and Schoen and Ashley Schoneman. The Panthers' next match was a weekend tournament in Peoria in the Hotels at Grand Prarie Invitational.

The Panthers had a solid weekend as of Sunday in Peoria, Illinois. The Panthers have claimed a couple of double wins and five more singles victories at the invitational. The team of Schoneman and Schoen played in the final on Sunday after two victories on Saturday. The result came after the Post went to print.

Drvaric and Schoen faced off in a seminfinal of flight A on Sunday after Drvaric beat Juliana Frey of Eastern Illinois in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-2. Schoen beat Martina Schnapp of Northern Illinois with scores of 7-5. 6-4.

In the flight B tournament, Schoneman beat Jessica Buterbaugh of Bradley in straight sets. Also, it will be fellow teammate freshman Gow in the other semifinal after defeating Annie Egan of Eastern Illinois in straight sets also.
