Be Prepared
A list of items you may not have brought to the dorms
True to Wisconsin form, weather is often unpredictable here on campus. Yet nothing – rain, wind or snow – will deter a prepared Wisconsinite from attending class.
You're all moved in, but did you bring everything? All too often, students find themselves short-handed in times of need. Allow the following list to be a gentle reminder while making purchases for your new home.
A Hot Pot
Nothing beats the ability to cook noodles without leaving the confines of your room. The hot pot is a container with a hot plate at the bottom which boils water in a matter of minutes. All you need is electricity. This is a must have for the beginner chef.
A Tool Box
A broken item in your room doesn't have to be a tragic loss. No matter the task, a basic tool kit is the ticket to quick fixes and emergencies. Find your own inner handy-man with the help of these convenient gadgets.
An Ironing Board and Iron
Wrinkles are a pain, especially when there's nothing you can do about it. By having this simple duo within arm’s reach, all clothing faux pas are manageable. It leaves you ready to cruise campus in style.
A Bedside Fan
It only takes a few minutes to realize how stuffy and stifling the dorm rooms can become. A good night’s sleep is quite impossible in such uncomfortable conditions. But all it takes is a breeze on your face to ease your discomfort. This item is highly recommended.
A Desk Lamp
Every dormitory room has a ceiling light to brighten the living space. But, what is a person to do when a roommate wishes to go to bed while the other is up studying? By having a desk lamp, the avoidable dispute over light and dark is relieved.
An Umbrella
True to Wisconsin form, weather is often unpredictable here on campus. Yet nothing – rain, wind or snow – will deter a prepared Wisconsinite from attending class. A simple umbrella is perfect for those drizzly days spent meandering from building to building, and with it you won’t have to waste energy worrying you resemble a wet dog.
A Laundry Basket
This seems like an obvious item, but it’s an easy one to forget. Having done little-to-no laundry before moving out, the newcomer to the residence halls shoves the thought to the back of his or her mind. When hauling weeks of dirty clothes, towels and sheets around the dormitories, a laundry basket or bag becomes a lifesaver.
Hangers
Hangers are essential if one wants to utilize his or her closet space to its fullest potential. This will also help prevent any potential wrinkle fiascos, keeping clothes neatly, or not so neatly, hung.
So don’t feel like all hope is lost yet. Consider yourself gently reminded of not only these suggestions, but other items that may also have been triggered as you read along. Prepare yourself now before it's too late and you are left high, dry and unequipped.
