New players play a large role

The new look UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team opened the season by shooting a blistering 42 percent from behind-the-arc en-route to a decisive 75-51 win over Loyola-Marymount Friday at the World Vision Classic in Ames, Iowa.
Junior Transfer Tone Boyle led the way for the Panthers with 20 points. He was one of four Panthers to score in double-digits in the opening game of the season.
"Overall I was pleased," Panthers Head Coach Rob Jeter said. "We can play better. That's what I am excited about knowing there are some things we can correct."
The Panthers were in control for most of the game jumping out to an early lead, and led by as much as 13 points in the first half. After allowing Loyola-Marymount to get to within seven about halfway through the second half the Panthers started on a 19-4 run to put the game out of reach.
True freshman Tony Meier was instrumental down the stretch as he scored 14 points with 12 rebounds for his first colligate double-double.
“Just playing with these guys makes it so easy,” said Meier. “Once we get flowing it’s just us out there playing.”
Deion James came off the bench and added a career-high four three-pointers. All in all, new players accounted for nine of the Panthers 14 three pointers in the game.
The Panther defense also came out to play holding Loyola-Marymount to only 31.5 percent shooting from the field. Going back to last year this would have been the second lowest shooting percentage the Panthers allowed.
Milwaukee will host their first regular season home game on Wednesday against Upper Iowa starting at 7 pm at U.S. Cellular Arena.
