Go green or go corporate?

By Melissa Campbell

I hope Shepherd Express nixes chains from the competition in the future, but until then I will have to suffer with the corporate dribble. At least for now I have my red X to give them.

We have such tough choices these days. Recycle or throw it out? Buy local or buy corporate? Gold stars is back from its hiatus to address these very concerns.

Gold stars: America Recycles Day
In honor of America Recycles Day, Nov. 15, UW-Milwaukee celebrated with a display in the UWM Union Concourse, complete with bins to dispose your unwanted cell phones, PDAs, pagers and tennis shoes. With the advent of more and more prepackaged goods and one-time-use trinkets, we reuse less and trash more. Since the average American tosses almost five pounds of garbage a year, a day dedicated to recycling doesn’t seem that bad. And contrary to popular belief, recycling is not a modern concept—people have been recycling since before the 1920s. While it took a downswing in the past, the U.S. recycling rate has risen 20 percent since 1960. Even though America Recycles Day has come and gone, that doesn’t mean you can’t still think about your environmental impact. To learn more about recycling, visit www.nrc-recyle.org.

Red Xs: The Shepherd’s “Best of Milwaukee”
Our city is in a sad state when chain restaurants like McDonalds and Red Lobster are considered the best Milwaukee has to offer. While this is nothing new for the “Best of” lists, choosing chains shouldn’t even be an option. I always thought that this was aimed at celebrating Milwaukee’s greatness. Every city has a McDonalds and a Red Lobster, but they don’t have gems like Brady St. Pharmacy, Pizza Shuttle or Comet Café. Some of the categories do celebrate locales specific to Brew City, but others just stoop to generic clones. I hope Shepherd Express nixes chains from the competition in the future, but until then I will have to suffer with the corporate dribble. But at least for now I have my red X to give them.
