By Mike Kennedy
After losing their first two meets of the season against Wisconsin and Wright St. the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s swimming team has beaten four-straight teams to push their record to 4-2, 2-1 in the Horizon League.
In their final home meet of the semester the Panthers were able to sweep UIC, Butler and North Dakota in a convincing fashion. Milwaukee was able to beat the Flames, 176.5-123.5, the Fighting Sioux, 199-101 and the Bulldogs, 254-39 while also earning six individual wins and a relay win.
Kerry Rossow, Bailey Nennig, Ellie Gross, Danielle Wenger and Sarah Wardecke won each of their respected events while senior Ashley Hall won both of her diving events. The 400 freestyle relay team, which consists of Wardecke, Danielle Chapman, Kelsey Ogle and Heidi Niespodzany, won their race by four-tenths of a second over North Dakota.
Hall was able to win both the one-meter dive and the three-meter dive with fellow Panther junior Rachel Grimm placed second in the one-meter and third in the three-meter.
Rossow was able to finish first in the 100 breaststroke and finished second in the 200 breaststroke by just two seconds behind UIC’s Sarah Harper.
Nennig won the 200 butterfly while Gross tapped the wall first in the 100 freestyle.
Wenger took the win in the longest event at the meet, the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:31:31.
Wardecke, a true freshman who won two Fox Valley Association Swimmer of the Year twice during her high school career, won the 100 freestyle and also took second in the 50-meter free.
Senior Molly Finn placed second in each of her respected events, finishing just behind Nennig in the 200 IM, one-tenth of a second behind UIC’s Brooke Sawyer in the 200 butterfly and two-tenths of a second out of first place in the 100 butterfly.
The swim team will head to Indianapolis this weekend for a two-day meet against IUPUI, Xavier and St. Louis.
The Panthers next home meet will not be until Jan. 24 when they will face Western Illinois before heading to the Horizon League Championships in Brown Deer from Feb. 25-28.
