“Today was a sweet victory. All the guys really stepped up and played well,” said head coach Jon Coleman.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s soccer team ensured themselves second place and a bye in the conference tournament with a 1-0 victory over University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Saturday night.
The goal came at the 78 minute mark when Junior Adam Skalecki, who just came off the bench a few minutes earlier, put home a loose ball from 14 yards out.
“Today was a sweet victory. All the guys really stepped up and played well,” said Panther head coach Jon Coleman. “We all played well as a team. Adam came on in the 70th minute and made the most of his opportunity.”
Grant Fernstrum also had a big game, stopping all four shots on goal, including one golden opportunity for the Phoenix to tie it up with about two minutes remaining.
The Panthers closed out their conference season on an extremely good note. Not only did they beat rival Green Bay to take second place in the Horizon League, but they also brought back to campus the Chancellor’s Cup.
“It’s always nice to walk away with some hardware,” said Coleman. “It’s a long standing trophy. Every year we can have it is nice.”
UWM still has two remaining games before the conference tournament will take place, with the first of those being a Halloween match up with cross-town foe Marquette. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.
