Channel is going to be transformed into a more efficient, all-purpose media area.
I’m sure all west tower residents are peeved by the third floor construction zone impeding access to the Sandburg Café. Others students may have noticed it too in passing, but all the same, few people even realize that the area, which connects the west tower to the cafeteria, has a name and a purpose.
Since it has been closed for renovations since mid-summer, The Channel, as it is properly named, is an obscure University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee landmark to the campus freshmen.
To the older inhabitants, Channel was a kind-of-okay space with old sound equipment that constantly broke down, an inconveniently placed stage and other out-dated accessories. However, this will no longer be the case. The Channel is currently under construction and being prepped for major improvements.
Along with a huge injection of flare and pizzazz, designed by one of UWM’s own architecture students and enhanced through input from S.H.A.C., Channel is going to be transformed into a more efficient, all-purpose media area. It’s going to have comfortable seating, a brand new stage, club lighting, Wi-Fi, a large television, new sound equipment, a pool table, karaoke and a game lounge.
Essentially, it will be the perfect chill-out zone for every Sandburg resident, since it’s only open to residents, especially those that like to study with a little background noise.
Unfortunately, this seemingly amazing prospect won’t be open for use until January, at the earliest. As of now, all of the major construction is finished. It’s just the little details that need to be sorted out and executed.
Randall Logan, the residential program manager and mastermind behind the design of Flicks as well as the new and improved Channel, assures us that the wait will be well worth it.
Once Channel is re-opened it can play host to many exciting events: dance competitions, Sandburg Idol, talent shows, monthly parties with guest DJs and battles of the bands.
