“Liberals claim that if you oppose their economic agenda, you are greedy, if you oppose their environmental agenda, you are a polluter, or if you oppose affirmative action, you must be a racist bigot,” – Peter Schweizer
Peter Schweizer brought his most recent presentation, “Liberal Hypocrisy,” to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union last Tuesday, sponsored by the UWM College Republicans.
Schweizer is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University and a former consultant to NBC News. He has written several books, including his most recent “Do as I Say (Not as I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy.”
His presentation began by giving examples of conservatives caught in hypocritical acts, such as Sen. Larry Craig soliciting sex in an airport men’s’ restroom, and stating that “people think of conservatives when they think of hypocrisy.”
From here he went on to say that despite this view of hypocrisy towards conservatives, the liberals are really the bigger hypocrites.
“Liberals claim that if you oppose their economic agenda, you are greedy, if you oppose their environmental agenda, you are a polluter, or if you oppose affirmative action, you must be a racist bigot,” said Schweizer.
Schweizer then brings up the question of whether or not these liberals are actually practicing what they preach. Throughout his presentation, Schweizer gave many examples of liberals who aren’t following through with what they encourage Americans to do.
One example was the famous Ted Kennedy, and his strong stance on the banning of firearms. Despite this stance, Kennedy’s bodyguard was caught with an unregistered handgun and two submachine guns. Kennedy claimed this was for his protection.
But isn’t protection what those opposed to the firearm ban want for themselves? Obviously there is a double standard here, according to Schweizer.
Schweizer also uses Michael Moore and his book “Stupid White Men” to make his point. In the book, Moore talks about “racist America” and how Affirmative Action is not being practiced.
Schweizer did his own research to see if Moore was actually practicing this action. He looked at the credits of all the documentaries, books, and films Moore has done and found that Moore had employed very few minorities, falling into the category of “racist American” as well, according to Schweizer.
Hypocrisy is part of the human condition, according to “Do as I Say.”
His final point was that all people are hypocritical, but conservatives get a worse reputation.
“When conservatives abandon their principles, they harm themselves and their families as Sen. Craig did. However, when liberals do it, they actually improve their lives and have greater prosperity,” said Schweizer.
