Miller Park is empty, Lambeau Field is too far away and impossible to get tickets to and the college basketball season doesn’t kick off Midnight Madness, the official start of basketball season, for another week. Being a sports fan in Milwaukee is at its all-time low during this scrap of the year, which I call the sports season halftime.
Let’s start with the Brewers. I know it has been drilled into your skull, but the Brewers had a successful year despite not making it to the playoffs. If you take a look at the Brew Crew members that are returning, you should be ecstatic because those same Brewers who contributed for 231 home runs will be back, and back stronger than ever.
True, the season doesn’t start for another… well, they get two months off before practice starts again and that is why we love baseball.
So if baseball season is done, at least in Milwaukee, then what about football season? Well it is now the fifth week in the season and you’re just starting to get the grove of your fantasy team down, who to start when and who to never let see your roster again but that could be unsatisfying if your at the bottom of your league and if your at the top of the league, well enjoy your winnings.
We all know that actually watching football for fun is, well, entertainment but when the Patriots and Cowboys face off in the Super Bowl will anyone be surprised? No, so there goes our football fun until December when the season actually matters.
Why is this part of the year so bland? Because we all know that college basketball season is just around the corner and watching this year’s Greg Oden, a.k.a. O.J. Mayo or Tim Flowers, if you don’t know him you will soon, will be just as exciting as thinking that after week five the Packers are going to make it to the playoffs.
The start of the college basketball season brings out the best in everyone and the best part of our sports season is just around the corner. The World Series is going to start Oct. 24, followed immediately by the start of the college basketball season.
Sydney Crosby will be lighting up the NHL for a few months, the NFL games being played will actually mean something in two weeks and, oh yeah, LeBron James, a.k.a. Yankee fan in Cleveland, and the rest of the post-Tim Donaghy NBA will be playing in the background.
It’s halftime in the sports season, take a break and prepare for the second half.
