Success for women’s’ volleyball
Panthers back to winning ways
By Jeremy Tiedt
The first game of the match was a hard-fought game all the way to the end, with ties at 22, 25 and 26.
Leanne Felsing led the way with her ninth triple-double as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee got back on track Tuesday night in a sweep against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay; 30-27, 30-24 and 30-28.
The Panthers (15-2, 6-1 Horizon) had their 14-game winning streak snapped Saturday night against Cleveland State and responded nicely Tuesday with their ninth sweep this season and their 28th win over UW-GB in their last 30 meetings.
The Panthers returned setter Kellye Zaporski from the injured list, only to replace her with Maddie Sueppel who spent the match on the bench resting a knee injury.
Zaporski played well in her return, recording 17 assists, only falling short to team leader Leanne Felsing who had 26.
Jamie Gabrielsen continued her dominance of the league, racking up another 16 kills to push her league-leading total to 271.
The first game of the match was a hard-fought game all the way to the end, with ties at 22, 25 and 26. Two kills by freshman stand-out Natalie Schmitting and two errors by Green Bay would eventually sink the Phoenix.
In the second game the Panthers were in control throughout. Leading for most of the match, the Panthers would see their lead pushed out to 26-20 on a kill by
Kelly Olson. The Phoenix did make things interesting, however, climbing back to within three at 27-24, but it was two errors once again that would finish off the Phoenix after a Gabrielsen kill.
Coming out of the break the Panthers looked like they would finish the Phoenix off easily, but Green Bay fought back and would take the lead briefly at 21-20. The Panthers, however, answered with kills by Becky Peters and Natalie Schmitting to regain the lead at 25-22, only to see the Phoenix tie things back up at 27 on a UWM error. It was Leanne Felsing that would knock the Phoenix out for good after a great spike by Nicole Vilter with two kills of her own, setting the final score at 3-0.
The Panthers returned to action Sunday against Valparaiso, who is currently in a three-way tie with the Panthers and Cleveland State for first place in the conference.
UWM will face Loyola-Chicago on Oct. 12 for the first of two home games this weekend.
