A burglary was committed on the 13th floor of Sandburg’s North Tower sometime between 1:30 p.m. Sep. 16 and 8:30 pm. Sep. 17. A Visa credit card and $15 was removed from the victim’s purse, which was just inside her dorm room. The victim reported that her room was locked at all times except between the hours of noon and 3:00 p.m. Sept.16 while she watched a football game in the common area. There are currently no suspects.
A bicycle valued at $300 was stolen from outside of Sandburg Hall’s South Tower Sept.17. The bicycle was last seen at around 2 p.m. A $15 cable-style lock was also taken.
Graffiti was discovered on a men’s room hand dryer in the Kenilworth building on Sep 18th. The graffiti was red and illegible. Cleanup costs were estimated at $50.
At 3 p.m. Sep 18, a woman, returning to her car in the EMS underground parking lot, discovered that a rear window had been broken. No items were reported missing from the car. Approximately $100 in damage was caused.
A student had his backpack stolen from the UWM Bookstore lobby around 11 a.m. Sep 19. Shortly thereafter, UWM Police received a report of a suspicious man attempting to sell books at Panther Books. Surveillance footage revealed that the man selling books at Panther Books matched the description of the man thought to have taken the backpack from the UWM Bookstore. An eyewitness provided UWM police with a name, and the suspect was arrested. The victim’s books were recovered, and the offender was fined for theft. The backpack itself was not recovered.
A Motorola cell phone valued at $189 was stolen from a break room in the Sandburg Hall dorms. A Sandburg staff member left his phone to charge overnight from Sep 18 to Sep19. When he returned for the phone, it was gone.
UWM Police responded to a complaint of a suspicious smell in the Sandburg dorms on Sep 19. Officers knocked on the door of a 4th floor suite in West Tower and were allowed in by the resident. Officers knocked on the door where the smell was strongest and explained that they were there to investigate what smelled like burning marijuana. The occupant of the room replied “Yeah, right,” but came to the door anyway. He consented to a search and told the officers that the “stuff” was in the top right drawer of his desk. Green leafy substance was discovered in a baby food jar along with a multicolored glass pipe containing marijuana residue. The student was cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
On Sep 19, a pink blouse, valued at $35 dollars, and a denim jacket, valued at $80, was stolen from a dress shop in the retail space of the Kenilworth Square. The suspect was a black female, 5’8”, wearing a colorful headscarf. She was seen placing the items of clothing under her clothes and fleeing on foot. She was pursued by an employee of the shop but not caught. On Sep. 20 at 11:30 a.m., a woman matching the suspect’s description was seen at the shop wearing an outfit matching the stolen outfit’s description. UWM police were notified, but the suspect wasn’t found.
The two side mirrors were removed from a woman’s Toyota Camry on Sep 20. The car was located in the Sandburg parking lot. Police discovered fingerprints in dust on the car and recorded them. The woman reported that she had no recently failed relationships and could think of no motive for the damage to her vehicle.
On Sep. 20 at 10:40 p.m. UWM Police were called to assist the Milwaukee Police Department on a call to a house party on the 3400 block of N. Downer Avenue. Ten underage drinking citations were issued. All of the people cited were UWM students.
Two UWM police officers on routine patrol in Downer Woods discovered two men off of the path smoking from a tubular-type object. When the officers approached them, the two men fled toward the south exit but were stopped by a waiting squad car. The officers on foot retrieved a rolled plastic baggie that was tossed into the woods by the men as they fled. It contained marijuana. One of the men was cited for possession of marijuana and the other was released. They were both spared citations for littering and straying from the designated Downer Woods paths.
Sandburg staff reported a man urinating in a corner of Sandburg Hall’s patio on Sept.21. When UWM police responded to the call, an eyewitness pointed out the suspect, who was speaking loudly and slurring his words. When asked about the patio urination he replied, “Oh…that.” The man was underage, and a preliminary breathalyzer revealed a blood alcohol content of .197. Two citations were issued: one for underage drinking and one for depositing human waste.
