The Milwaukee Panther Club Lacrosse team found scoring chances hard to come by last Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers went down to the University of Wisconsin Lacrosse Club, 13-0.
The Panthers managed only three shots-on-goal in the contest, while Madison put 23 shots on the UWM net. The offense was plagued by bad decision making all day.
They committed far too many turnovers due to reckless long passes that would end up incomplete or intercepted by the Badger defense. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee had only two short sets in their offensive zone, in which they only managed one shot. The other two shots came on long runs by UWM attackers, resulting in routine saves for the Badger goalie.
The Panthers defense had a rough day as well, with multiple defensive breakdowns allowing UW too many scoring chances in the middle of the field. UWM looked sloppy from the beginning, allowing three goals in the opening quarter.
Madison opened the scoring when Brian Bell put home the first of his four goals from the right side five minutes into the contest. Milwaukee native Matt McLaughlin was left wide open thanks to a defensive breakdown by the Panthers and found Bell waiting on the right side of the crease who took the pass and put home the easy goal.
The offensive pressure didn’t stop from the Badgers who kept possession in the offensive zone for a large majority of the game. Madison added two more goals in the opening quarter and four more in the second to take a 7-0 lead into the intermission.
The Panthers came out stronger in the second half, showing much more intensity on the field and finally getting their first shot on goal in the third quarter. It wasn’t enough to overcome the Badger’s superior game, however. The Badgers scored six more goals including two more from Bell to finish out the scoring for the day. Milwaukee saved 10 of 23 shots while Madison stopped all three shots-on-goal.
