Blood baths in Rome

Your chance at Internet stardom

By Sean Quast

Now comes the fun part. Caligula’s rampage bar can build up faster if a player gets more into the game by shouting, screaming or cursing at it.

When I first really started playing Flash games I used to visit the Cartoon Network website, since the games there were top quality.

Years passed and I found sites that catered more towards my adult taste, and rarely went back to check the games there.

Not until I, as an adult, went to the adult swim site (adultswim.com) did I realize how Cartoon Network is still producing great games.

There are a lot of great games on this site. But the latest one, titled “Viva Caligula” (http://www.adultswim.com/games/vivacaligula/index.html), shines above all else, because it’s the first game I’ve experience that bring the enthusiasm of the player in to account during the game play.

The game itself is simple. The player, as Caligula, is going around Rome slaughtering everything in order to purify the city of its drunken, whorish, violent state.

Gameplay is similar to a mix of Zelda and Double Dragon: you move around parts of the city slaughtering at random anyone you feel. Some people will run from you while some will fight back.

There is an entire alphabet of weapons for a player to utilize, from axe to zampogna. Some weapons are repetitive, but when coming up with 26 weapons some have to serve the same purpose, right?

The more weapons a player gets, the more options they have to kill someone. The more killing a player does, the faster Caligula’s rampage bar builds up.

Rampage mode lets Caligula kill almost anything in one gruesome hit that causes the victim’s body to explode, sending limbs and pieces all over the screen.

The more people you kill successively the more bonus points you get, and the higher your score.

Now comes the fun part. Caligula’s rampage bar can build up faster if a player gets more involved in the game by shouting, screaming, or cursing at it.

The game has the ability to sync up with a microphone or camera used by your computer.

It makes the game easier, and, if a player reads the fine print in the instructions, it could be your ticket to stardom.

Unfortunately, upon choosing to accept video and audio link up, you are informed that your scores are not being recorded.

But if the game’s popularity rises, then it is very possible that a player who really gets into the game and gets very high scores will make some kind of an appearance on the adult swim website, or who knows where else.

4 out of 5 minutes of wasted time
