“This is our great opportunity”

Gov. Doyle addresses Midwest’s opportunity to help

By Kevin Lessmiller

“It is important that various regions of the country get to work.” – Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle provided opening comments at the Midwest Governors Greenhouse Gas Public Forum on Tues. July 29.

The forum, held in conference room 7970 above Grand Avenue Mall, was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education. Doyle thanked UWM and referred to the school as “a great and emerging research institution”.

Doyle gave four specific assets Wisconsin has to offer in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing renewable sources: a “long time conservation ethic”, “great agricultural production”, a reputation as a “great forestry state”, and status of a “research center”.

“We have to be working together,” said Doyle of the Midwest as a region. “It is important that various regions of the country get to work.”

The Governor also made reference to a Memorandum of Understanding he signed with the United Kingdom. The deal promotes cooperation between Wisconsin and the U.K. regarding greenhouse gas emissions and renewable energy.

Doyle said he’d like to see a national or even international “cap and trade market”. Such an economic system “rewards business ingenuity”, according to Doyle, and provides incentive for businesses to reduce pollution.

Gov. Doyle closed by acknowledging the diversity of those concerned with environmental issues. He thanked everyday people who “want to be part of the answer”.

“To me, this is our great opportunity,” he said.
