The infectious, pop-savvy vocals along with smart, and often brash lyrics of Rilo Kiley will be making a stop in Milwaukee on May 23 at the Pabst Theater.

The band, fronted by former child star Jenny Lewis, boasts an impressive discography since their formation in the late ‘90s. Since then, fans have seen their sound evolve from country-esque to indie folk-rock.

Fellow band-mate Blake Sennett shared the vocal spotlight with Lewis on earlier albums, though she has come to dominate more recent releases. The New York Sun called Lewis, “one of the few singers on the rock scene…whose voice is a renowned musical instrument.” Rilo Kiley released their first full-length album, “Take-Offs and Landings,” with indie label Barsuk Records in 2001. Their sophomore disc, “The Execution of All Things” followed in 2002, under Saddle Creek Records. In 2004, they were picked up by Warner Bros. and released “More Adventurous,” which included the singles, “It’s a Hit,” and “Portions for Foxes.” The band is currently on tour for their most recent release, “Under the Blacklight,” which has a more blues/soul feel, and a much bigger sound than previous works.

In between albums, Lewis has had a number of outside projects. She appeared on the Postal Service’s album “Give Up,” and the subsequent tour with Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. She also released a critically acclaimed solo album “Rabbit Fur Coat,” with the Watson Twins.

Rilo Kiley will be stopping in cities all over the nation through June 18. If you can’t make the Pabst show, but still want to catch the band, you can see them on May 22 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, or the Riviera Theater in Chicago on May 24. Tickets are currently on sale, and can be purchased through the Pabst’s Web site, www.pabsttheater.org.
