Dorm elevator causes annoyances

Students on the top floor wait up to 20 minutes

By Stephanie Brien

Along with adjusting to classes and a new roommate, many students in Sandburg Halls have one more annoyance do deal with: elevators.

Jackie Garski and Sarah Stojsavljevic are roommates on the north tower’s top floor, floor 26. At peak class times in the morning, it can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to get to their room.

The delays the first week of classes were due in part to the closure of one of the three north tower elevators for repairs. There was a large pulley in the bottom of the elevator shaft that needed to be replaced, but should be up and running the rest of the year.

Garski and Stojsavljevic are both annoyed with the elevator wait, but said it’s worth it when they get to the top.

“You don’t have to listen to people running around above us,” Garski said. Stojsavljevic agreed, “The view is really nice up here.”

But not all students are upset about the wait.

“You meet people on there,” said Eric Kreiter, who lives on floor 21 in the north tower.

Besides temporary broken elevators, too many students stuffed into one elevator can cause it to temporarily get stuck.

Srg. Art Kosh of the UW-Milwaukee Police Department said, “On average they receive a couple calls per week from students stuck in the dorm elevators. Most of the time, someone from campus can help them get out, but sometimes they need to call in the fire department for assistance.”

Instead, Katheryn Kuczmanski, who lives on one of the lower floors of north tower, said she usually takes the stairs instead.

“If they do things like that, they will live to be longer,” said a grandmother who was helping her granddaughter move a couple things into her room.
