Cross-breeding will work…next year

I was at the UWM Union the other day and picked up the Sept. 4 Post to see how things were going. Everything seems OK except a problem with your "Fringe" page 4 story titled, "A little tomato 101."

I'm questioning this story as a Wisconsin certified Master Gardener and as an Information Specialist (MA, UW-Mad, Library and Info Studies).

Not to be flip, but perhaps Ms. Agee might look into Botany (or Genetics), 101. The procedure she advises for generating new tomato varieties might well work for plants grown NEXT YEAR from seeds collected from her "doctored" plants this year, but her tomatoes this year will keep true to the genetic make-up they carry from the seeds from which they were grown.

She will certainly not get a new variety this year simply by manually cross-pollinating this season. Please print a correction before too many people are disappointed in not becoming an "instant Luther Burbank".

Explore alternatives for vintage clothes

Dear Editor,

I just finished reading your Sept. 4th issue's local area thrift store article. I just wanted to drop a line that there is another thrift store in the neighborhood that often gets overlooked and is within walking distance of UWM.

Niche Style / Sound is located at 1922 E. Park Place, just four blocks south of the UWM campus near the corner of Park and Murray. Niche has been open since 2004 and sells handpicked vintage clothing, locally created designer clothing and limited edition

T-shirts. We also cater to electronic music enthusiasts and have a large stock of 12" vinyl

records and mix CDs in the back. We are open Monday through Saturday, Noon to 7 p.m. Our phone number is 414.964.5417 and we can be found on the Web at

www.nichemilwaukee.com or www.myspace.com/nichemilwaukee.

Hopefully one of your staff has the opportunity to stop in soon and check us out (at least those of your staff into vintage wear!).

Thanks for your time!

Article on “Cheap Booze” encourages wrong idea

Dear Editor,

I just felt that I had to write and give you my opinion.

I am a father of a new UWM freshman and we picked up a copy of the July 17 Post sometime this summer when we were on campus.

Though it appears it was written specifically for incoming freshmen I decided to take a look at it myself. For the most part it was informative and useful but I took issue with one particular article. That being “Cheap Booze is Sometimes Best” by Nicole Arata.

Why, with all the problems of binge drinking on campuses, would your paper be encouraging it and apparently even promoting it?

I don’t get it!

When an 18-year old freshmen comes to your campus they are underage and alcohol consumption is illegal. Why do you and your staff feel it should be taken so lightly? I, by no means, am against alcohol in general, but feel college freshmen should not be encouraged to buy the cheapest booze to see how quickly they can get drunk.

Many studies have shown that alcohol is the main contributor to date rapes and violence on campuses.

Freshmen students have enough to deal with as sober students so please avoid in future editions encouraging them to get drunk on cheap booze.

Thank you for your time,
Paul Hertel
