“Now is not the time to sit back and wait to apply, as application deadlines are quickly approaching.”

As summer approaches students are getting ready to lose the books, catch the rays and earn some extra cash.

Many locations on campus, especially within the residence halls, are hiring summer employees. There are a variety of positions and tasks available, each of which can earn you extra cash.

A bonus for summer school students for these job options is the ability to fit in some hours around classes you may be taking. Many of the hiring venues have flexible hour options because of the student population that takes advantage of these campus jobs.

A major part of summer employment opportunities is the maintenance and custodial positions at the dorms.

Positions for these manual labor jobs include carpet, paint, maintenance, and custodial crews. Each crew of 20 to 35 people has starting wages of $7.25 per hour, except for the carpet crew, which begins at $7.75 per hour. Many of these positions have been filled but are worth looking into in case spaces open for more employees.

The Sandburg and RiverView main desks also have applications available online. These jobs include basic main desk operations, as well as mail room positions. Hours for each position are flexible, and can range from 10 to 20 hours per week with an average university hourly pay rate.

These jobs are unique from other residence hall employment opportunities because students have the ability to retain these jobs into the school year.

For more information about job openings and opportunities within the dormitories, including security and the above mentioned items, go to www.uwm.edu/housing/employment/.

Other campus employment includes operations in the Union, Klotsche Center or Children's Center. By going to www.uwm.edu/Dept/CDC/oncampusjobsearchguide.html, the campus job search Web site, or www4.uwm.edu/ccc/CCEOStudentHeaderPage1.cfm, the Children's Center Web site, you can learn more about and apply for open positions.

Now is not the time to sit back and wait to apply, as application deadlines are quickly approaching. It takes very little time to complete the forms, and most can be done electronically.

No matter which option you decide to act on, each provides a chance to earn the cash you may have been lacking throughout the school year. Oscar Wilde once said, “The best way to appreciate your job is to imagine yourself without one.”

Don't be left this summer with no money and nothing to do. Check out the above Web sites and search through the many opportunities available to stay involved on campus.
