Raiders pound Panthers

Wozniak extends hit streak to 10 games

Coming off Friday’s 8-2 victory over the second place team in the conference, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team must have been beaming with confidence. Wright St. took that feeling away Saturday as they took the final two games of the series in convincing style.

In the first game, the Panthers ran into WSU ace Jon Durket. The junior from California quieted the Panther bats that just one day earlier had been extremely loud.

The Raiders showed why they’re near the top of the league table in the first inning with a three-run home run by Justin Park. Teammate Casey McGrew followed suit by hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, stretching the lead to 5-0.

Trying to follow the long-ball pattern, UWM senior Nick Wichser belted a two-run job of his own in the top of the third to make it a 5-2 game. That was just about Durket’s only mistake of the game, as he allowed only eight hits and didn’t give up a walk, throwing 128 pitches in the complete game effort, with the final score 8-2.

The Panthers looked to rebound from their poor performance from the plate in game two and got off to a good start. They plated three runs in the top of the first inning when junior Shawn Wozniak cleared the bases with a double, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. Wozniak would later score to make it 4-0.

The Raiders were up to the challenge however, they scored three of their own in the first to cut the lead to just one. The real power was on display in the third inning as the home team added six runs while batting around the order, plus one.

WSU never let their foot off the pedal as they pounded out 20 hits in the game and scored 19 runs.

UWM didn’t go down with out a fight, as they mustered 15 hits of their own, but left too many base runners stranded (11 in total) throughout the game.

The pair of losses leaves the Panthers with a 14-26 record overall, 6-10 in the Horizon League. This week UWM hosts Northern Illinois on Tuesday at three o’clock and Valparaiso for a three game series Friday and Saturday.
