Brewers manager Ned Yost isn’t worried, and Brewers fans shouldn’t be either. Milwaukee is above .500 and they are about to get outfielder Mike Cameron in the lineup. That’s the good part.
The bad part? The Brewers are a 12th in the National League in batting average and have only two everyday players hitting over. 300, and again, Yost isn’t worried.
“We’re not really sitting on it, but come Tuesday when Mike Cameron comes back that’s a boost too, in all phases of the game,” said Yost. “That’s another big piece that’s going to be here on Tuesday.”
Prince Fielder just recently hit his second and third homers of the season against the Phillies on Wednesday as part of a 5-4 Brewers victory.
Speaking of that game, it was the first save of the season for Derrick Turnbow, who hasn’t notched a save in a year to the day and the game ended with the same score. Did I mention that in that game Fielder also hit two homeruns? He did, call it what you want, but that outing will not result in Turnbow taking over for Eric Gagne.
Back to the hitting, with Mike Cameron finally making his debut this week the Brewers will be defensively sound and Cameron should bring a solid bat to the second spot in the batting order.
Tony Gwynn Jr. has just gotten back and though a horrible pinch-hitting strikeout on Thursday put him down, he should have a reliable bat as summer roles around.
With all the talk about the new bats coming up, something has to be said about the heart of this young lineup. Ryan Braun is finding his stroke, and Yost is expecting him to break out and have the rest of the team follow.
“I get the feeling that a couple of these guys are getting ready to bust loose,” said Yost. “Billy had a good day, Prince is getting ready to bust loose and Rickie’s been swinging the ball well.”
Corey Hart is flying under the radar but is another player that can spark a big run for the Crew in the upcoming weeks. While the top of the lineup will be producing, J.J. Hardy should have no problem getting comfortable in the seven spot in the next coming months. It’s a new spot for him but hitting is contagious and when the other bats get going his will follow.
Jason Kendall will be as reliable as always. Rickie Weeks will do the same and Yost will be expecting a lot out of this lineup once they are at full strength.
When Ben Sheets returns to the pitching rotation and now that Yovanni Gallardo is back, the Brewers will be a major threat to take the NL Central come the end of summer. The Boys of Summer are back.
