Both the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s and women’s track teams had strong showing this past weekend at the Dave Rankin Invite.
Senior Darren Cole qualified for NCAA Regionals for the second straight year with a jump of 49-10 ½, well over the qualifying standard of 49-2 ½. Cole also took part in winning the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.81 which checks in as the second fastest time in school history.
Other strong finishes from the men’s team came from the junior Adam Schlies and Isaiah Adams. Schlies brought in two second-place finishes in the long jump with a leapt of 23-0 ½ as well as just missing his own school record with a time of 14.46 in the 110 hurdles. Adams also ran 48.39 in 400m to take home a second place finish.
The pole vault was also good to the Panthers with both Adam Pod and Sean Jaehnig finishing tied for third with a height of 14-1 ¼. Senior Larry Enrhorn also finished in the top three with a toss of 51-7 ¾, good enough for third place.
Other notable finishes were; Quinn Mongovan in the high jump, Eric Pitt in the 3000m steeplechase and Patrick Casey in the 400m hurdles all of which brought home a 3rd place finish. Mongovan leapt 6-6 in the high jump, with Pitt turning a 9:55.46 in the chase and Casey crossing the finish line with a 54.88 in the hurdles.
The women would not be out done. Erin Havener broke her own school record in the pole vault with a height of 12-3 ½ to take second in the event, topping the old mark of 12-1 ½. Junior Beth Zimmerman also brought home a first place finish in the triple jump with a leapt of 38-7 ¾.
Two other Panthers finished in the top five in the triple jump. Sophomore Reigna Pierce took second with a jump of 37-9 ½ while Kicha Cary made her debut with a solid fifth place finish and a jump of 35-11 ½ .
Sophomore Jamie Wood brought home two third place finishes in both the shot put, with a throw of 40-5, and the disc with a personal best of 139-8.
The long jump found two Panthers in the top five with Zimmerman taking third with a jump of 17-11 ½, while Sophomore Emily Budde took fifth with a leapt of 17-6 ¾.
The Panthers also found second place finishes from senior Angie Huebner in the 500m with a time of 18:07.47 as well as from the 4x100m relay which ran a time of 47.85.
Some Panthers will be heading in different directions next weekend, with some competing at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, while others will be taking the short trip across town to compete at the Marquette Invitational.
