The new Smash Bros. game, “Smash Bros. Melee,” is a massive achievement, no doubt about it. The depth, the music, the characters and adventure mode add up to a tried and true formula.
But if you’re like me, you want more – more stages, more music, another side-scrolling adventure game and more characters - pretty much more of everything.
Anyone who has played the Smash Bros. series has said at one point or another, “Why don’t they have X or Y character in here? He/She is my favorite!” Well, that’s what dreams are for, my friends – dreams, and this article.
So, with licensing and all that other legal mumbo-jumbo aside, here is a small wish list for the next Smash Bros. game.
Character: Knuckles
From: “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”
Plays Like: A slower but more powerful version of Sonic
Now, to not go overboard, after all there are plenty of characters to pick from the Sonic series, but Knuckles seems appropriate because of his contrast to Sonic. Marth has Roy, Fox has Falco and Mario has Luigi, so why leave Sonic without a foil?
Character: Tails
From: “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”
Plays Like: A mix of Diddy Kong and Sonic
Tails is a unique character in many ways, but mostly in his design. Those two tails of his could offer a variety of attacks, flight abilities and specials attacks. He would be a pretty unique character to add.
Character: Grey Fox
From: “Metal Gear Solid”
Plays Like: A mix of Marth and Meta Knight
Based on speed alone, Grey Fox would have attributes like Marth. His quick attacks could be based off of Meta Knight, but his specials could be his own. He is a ninja, after all.
Character: Chun-Li
From: “Street Fighter 2”
Plays Like: Completely unique
It’s no secret that female characters are under-represented in Smash Bros., so Chun-Li could break down some of those barriers. She would bring to the table an array of new attacks (spinning bird kick, anyone?) and help level the playing field on the male vs. female front.
Character: Kasumi
From: “Dead or Alive”
Plays Like: Sheik
Another female addition, Kasumi would have the agility and quick attacks of Sheik. A true brawler, all her attacks would be up close and personal with a mix of speed and power in her specials.
Character: Mega Man
From: “Mega Man”
Plays Like: A mix of Captain Falcon and Samus
Mega Man, being a global fan favorite, would be a highly-praised addition indeed. Take Samus’ charge-up shot and Falcon’s sliding kick, and you pay homage to more than one of the games in his series. He could have a wide variety of attacks, possibly taking with him some specials from the Marvel vs. Capcom series.
Of course, there are hundreds of videogame characters around to add to Smash Bros, but they can’t all be added. It’s fun to think about, though. Now we just have to wait another seven years or so to see if any of our favorites make it into the next game.
