Whether you are a filmmaker, or a film watcher, this festival will spark all of your interests.

If you think you might be the next Steven Spielberg or creator of the Blair Witch Project, The Sandburg Flicks Film Festival is calling out to you. This will be the second annual Festival, which was a big hit with residents last year.

The event allows residents to show off their unique talent by creating a film in DVD format. It gives them a chance to showcase their debut film efforts on the big screen in Flicks, as well as the opportunity to win prizes valued at $200. The film must be created by University Housing residents, have a time length of three to 20 minutes, be either a documentary, experimental or narrative and have a submission form attached. The forms are available at the University Housing Web site.

Will Lemke, University Housing Program Specialist and creator of the festival, says that “any film under three minutes would be far too short, and anything exceeding 20 minutes would be too long for an audience.” Lemke went on to say, “The festival is one night, so we want to get everything in and keep the program going at a good pace.”

The festival maintains standard Flicks policies, meaning all residents can attend and are allowed to bring guests, but will be registered with security as usual. If planning on submitting a film, residents need to have the movie in DVD format and submit it to the Media Services room, C120 by April 11.

The films will be judged on originality, creativity, editing, style, cinematography and the overall execution. When asked to share his advice for student filmmakers, Lemke replied “Turn it in. If you have a short film lying around, turn it in. By entering you are eligible to win prizes from Best Buy. You might as well give yourself a shot,” he said.

Whether you are a filmmaker or a film watcher, this festival will spark your interests. It will give inspiration to others, and will just be a lot of fun.
