Tyler Bucholz’s track and field resume continues to grow as he broke the school record in the outdoor 400m this weekend with a time of 47.93.
Bucholz has run a sub-48.00 in three straight meets dating back to indoor conference, where he became the first Panther to accomplish the feat.
Even with Bucholz’s first place finish in the 200m and two second place finishes in the 400m and 4x100 the Panthers struggled as a team and finished in fifth.
Other notable performances from the men’s side where put by seniors Darren Cole and Justin Bohler and sophomore Quinn Mongoven. Cole’s leap of 46-8 ¼ was good enough for a second place finish, while sophomore Josh Zill’s jump of 45-5 ¾ placed him in fifth. Bohler’s time of 14.80 in the 100m hurdles earned him a second place finish while Zill received his second fifth place finish with a time of 15.21. Mongoven finished second in the high jump after clearing a height of 6-6 ¾ .
Two female Panthers were able to take home first place finishes, as juniors Beth Zimmerman won the triple jump with a leap of 38-5 ½ and Jes Weyandt took top honors in the pole vault clearing a height of 11-1 ¾ .
The women’s team combined for a total of 108.5 which placed them in third just behind Illinois St. and the host Southern Illinois.
Aside from the two first place finishes the Panthers also had three second place finishers. Junior Holly Nearman was the runner-up in the 1500m, the 4x400 team also finished in second, as well as sophomore Kelsey Conrad who finished second in the 200m.
Nearman’s time of 4:40.56 in the 1500m was the eighth fastest time in school history. While teammate Erin Magargee finished fourth in the event. Conrad ran a time of 25.28 in the 200m and joined up with Shannon Buttchen, Laura Ring and Angie Kaufman for a time of 3:55.57 in the 4x400.
The women’s 4x100m relay also had a good day finishing with a time of 48.88 for third place. That relay team consisted of Zimmerman, sophomore Emily Budda, Conrad and Kaufman.
Buttchen also notched a third place individually in the 800m with a time of 2:18.70, while sophomore Abbie Zaspel also had a third place showing in the 5000m with a time of 18:07.05.
Both teams will be heading back to Illinois next weekend. However they will be competing at the Big Blue Classic at Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill.
