Don’t forget the fact that all the wonderful amenities that come with living in the dorms, like heat, Internet access and water, are commonly not included in rent for an apartment or house.

You’ve made an appointment to look at some run-down flat on Cramer Street. or made a phone call checking on monthly rent at an apartment complex, but have you considered staying put in Sandburg and embracing the novelty of East Tower?

Spring semester is half over and the time is coming to decide where you’ll be residing next year. Many of you are thinking, “I can’t wait to get out of the dorms and get my own place off campus,” but before you start packing up, consider all that East Tower has to offer.

As a freshman, I lived in the West Tower of Sandburg with a single room and as the end of the year approached, I definitely did not feel ready to leave the dorms and move into a cold, unwelcoming house.

Living in East Tower as a sophomore has been the perfect fit for me. The full kitchen and bathroom make living here like a cross between a dorm and an apartment. I crank the heat up when I’m feeling chilly or blast the air conditioning, that’s right, air conditioning, when I’m warm.

The transition from a dorm room to an apartment or house may be more challenging than you think. First off, you can kiss the days of riding down a couple of floors to a cafeteria where hot meals already paid for await you. Yes, you will be forced to become responsible for making your own food and taking trips to Pick ‘n Save for the week’s groceries.

By living in East Tower, you get the best of both worlds. The good ol’ Sandburg Café is always there, but you can also celebrate being independent and cooking your very own meals with the kitchen available. You can practice your baking skills by creating various desserts and sharing them with your friends.

Don’t forget the fact that all the wonderful amenities that come with living in the dorms like heat, Internet access and water, are commonly not included in rent for an apartment or house

I know that after this school year, I will be ready to leave the halls of Sandburg and move onto the next step in my life, by getting an apartment or house.

But, I’m completely satisfied with my decision of living in the dorms for a second year, and I would definitely advise freshmen to seriously think about East Tower before rushing out of Sandburg.
