Aldermanic candidate wins primary from prison
Incumbent 6th District Ald. Michael McGee handily won his primary election, though he remains incarcerated. He advanced to the general election by garnering 32 percent of the vote, and will face off against Milele Coggs on Apr. 1. McGee has been held without bail since Memorial Day on allegations of bribery and buying votes in the district’s previous recall election. His court date is slated for after the election, in May.
Free lunch
Students will get a free lunch after completing an interactive hunger simulation Feb. 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will be led through a maze, paying their bills one by one over the course of thirty minutes until they run out of money. The event will take place in the Union Concourse. 25 percent of youth voters turn out According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a quarter of Wisconsin's eligible voters under 30 participated in the Feb. 19 primary, making youth turnout here equal to Massachusetts and second only to New Hampshire this year. Still, Wisconsin's youth voter turnout was up only slightly from 2004, when there was no Republican contest. And the vote on Feb. 19 by those under age 30 represented only 15 percent of all votes cast. Black Panther Party Co-Founder speaks at UWM
Bobby Seale, a co-founder of the Black Panther Party, will be speaking in the Wisconsin Room on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. The free event will feature a discussion about the civil rights movement, activism, the 60s, and how they pertain to today. The event is sponsored by the UWM Student Association and Students for a Democratic Society.
