Amber sees herself working in the same kind of environment she lives in now; a college campus, working as a hall director in a dormitory and dealing with student affairs
If Amber Krueger was given one day to relax and enjoy herself, you would most likely find her practicing her acoustic guitar, teaching karate or continuously texting all her buddies.
You might have seen the Beloit, WI native roaming around the halls of Sandburg Residence Hall, (East Tower to be more specific) where she acts as the Resident Assistant for the 14th and 15th floors.
She’s currently in her third year at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, pursuing a degree in communications.
There’s no doubt that Amber is a people-person. I learned this quickly in talking with her. She’s friendly, personable and down-to-earth, and these are all qualities essential to being a successful R.A.
When asked what her favorite part of being an R.A. is Amber responded, “I get to meet a lot of different people that I probably wouldn’t get to meet if I wasn’t an R.A.”
In 10 years, Amber sees herself functioning in the same kind of environment she lives in right now: a college campus, working as a hall director in a dormitory and dealing with student affairs. Her dream job involves working and meeting with students and planning programs.
“I hope to be working at a college, working with an organization like University Housing,” Amber said. Ideally, Amber hopes to live and work in Wisconsin, close to her family, but she wouldn’t mind moving away temporarily for a job.
Amber really admires the size and layout of the UWM campus. “It’s really close, and it doesn’t take long to walk anywhere,” she said.
If she had to take a class over again for fun, Amber would enroll in Currins 100, which is an introduction to teaching. (Amber started out as an early education major, and later switched to communications.) According to Amber, Currins 100 taught her a lot about herself, especially through the 50 hours spent in the classroom working with young students.
Speaking of young students, Amber offers a bit of advice to all you freshman students out there, “Stay organized and use your time wisely, but it’s okay to have fun once in awhile, too,” she says.
