During the day the lounge area is not as crowded or busy, so students could use this as a great place to meet for a study group or a get together.

All of us who live in Sandburg know, the Channel is an open lounge area found on the third floor located between the cafeteria and West Tower.

You might walk by and see someone playing the piano or a group of girls lounging in their pajamas, eating ice cream and catching up on the day’s gossip.

Channel has undergone a major renovation and is now a favorite hangout place for residents and their guests. Feb. 10 was the grand opening for this exciting addition to the dorms, but until March, Channel is only open on certain nights until more activities can be planned.

Channel is open during the day to all residents of Sandburg and RiverView as well as their guests. During the day, the lounge area is not as crowded or busy, so students can utilize this for a study session or get-together.

During the evening hours, students can utilize the PlayStation 3, XBOX 360 and PlayStation 2 in the new gaming lounge. In the 1960s, when Sandburg first opened, it included a full-size bar with alcohol available to all residents and older.

At that time, 18 was the legal age to purchase and consume alcohol. In the years to follow, Channel shut down and reopened a couple different times, and many renovations took place at Sandburg, including the addition of East Tower.

The next event for Channel is the North Tower Beach Bash on Wednesday Feb. 27. There’ll be free food and tons of prizes.

Not only will there be giveaways, but there will be a live DJ, open “mocktail” bar and a contest for the best beach wear. Check out the event in Channel on Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., and maybe bring back a full stomach and prizes.
