She stands alone

Botham passes Borseth for No. 1 on all-time win list

The Milwaukee Panthers were meeting for a bigger cause – the Think Pink event raising breast cancer awareness served a larger purpose – but there was something else that was special about the contest that might have been overlooked with all the other hoopla.

Sandy Botham, who has toiled on the Klotsche sidelines for over 10 years, passed former UW-Green Bay head coach Kevin Borseth for most victories in Horizon League women’s basketball history with their 76-70 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday.

Overcoming an early 6-0 and 9-3 deficit, the Panthers came back to take the lead at halftime, 36-32. The Panthers, who were leading 58-44 at one point in the second half, survived a late run by the Crusaders. Milwaukee still won despite double-digit efforts by five Crusaders. Sarah Ott led the Crusaders, knocking down 18 points and making all six of her shots in the game.

The Panthers were led by Traci Edwards, who had yet another double-double. Edwards led all scorers with 24 points to go with her 10 rebounds. Edwards did this despite turning the ball over five times. She made three of the four three-point attempts she took, the last of which left her, and the team, smiling during the ensuing timeout. The Panthers nearly gave away the game after leading by 14 at one point. Milwaukee committed 22 turnovers in the game to Valpo’s 14.

The victory moves the Panthers into a second place tie with Cleveland State at 8-5 in conference. The Panthers play Loyola on Thursday in their annual two-game road swing through Chicago.

The next home game is Mar. 6th vs. Detroit.
