Parents overreact

The parental tirades in the Sept. 4 issue of The Post are misguided and out of touch with modern student life. As one parent wrote in, many college freshmen are “vulnerable, impressionable, and easily misled.” However, parents who choose to continue coddling their college-bound children are crippling their children.
The parents who are “seriously considering a Christian college because of the low caliber” of The Post and its articles are denying the reality of modern student lifestyles. In doing so, they are in turn denying their children the ability to make life decisions and choices, as well as the opportunity to grow through experience.
These parents also claimed that they were the only ones with their children’s best interests at heart. However, the ignorance displayed in the letters to the editor disgusted me.
Parents who pass along stereotypes such as AIDS having been caused by promiscuity are more irresponsible than those of us who choose to write about the reality of student life. These parents who scathingly accuse The Post of lowering their children’s standards should take a step back and examine the standards they themselves have set for their children.
Parents who are so concerned with their children’s ability to make responsible drinking, sexual or lifestyle decisions, that they feel the need to remove their children from temptation should reflect upon their own parenting styles.
If a college-age child is so susceptible to negative outside influences, perhaps his or her parents should have considered teaching the skills he or she will need to live responsibly and successfully, rather than continuing to attempt to run their college-bound child's life.
