AIDS WALK WISCONSIN reports that in 2006, more than 408 new cases of HIV infection were reported in Wisconsin
Globally, the HIV/AIDS epidemic affects 40 million people. Even closer to home, the Center for Disease and Control reports that more than 5,900 people live with the HIV/AIDS in the state of Wisconsin.
AIDS WALK WISCONSIN reports that in 2006, more than 408 new cases of HIV infection were reported in Wisconsin, a 9 percent increase from 2005. Clearly, this global epidemic is now becoming a problem in our state.
Since coming out to my parents a few years ago, I have been very interested in finding ways to benefit the gay community in a positive way through learning about the global HIV/AIDS epidemic in college and how it affects the gay community. I have become very avid about participating in events and organizations that benefit HIV/AIDS victims. One of these major events is the AIDS WALK WISCONSIN, which is the largest fundraiser supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS in the state. Luckily for Milwaukee residents, this fundraiser takes place in our own backyard: the Milwaukee Lakefront on Saturday, Sept. 29. The initial walk begins at 12:30 p.m. but an opening ceremony and concert by the Chicago-native band Pulsation with a complimentary breakfast will take place on the Summerfest Grounds beginning at 10 a.m.
The walk promises to be a wonderful celebration with Chicago Spirit Cheerleaders, Brew City Beerleaders and UW-Platteville’s Marching Pioneers playing at rest stops to keep participants moving through the 5K walk on Milwaukee’s scenic lakefront.
The funds raised by the event will go directly to AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin, which is among the largest and most comprehensive AIDS service agencies in the country. The organization allows support for HIV/AIDS prevention efforts that reach more than 150,000 people in Wisconsin annually. All proceeds from the walk go towards HIV/AIDS research and the ability to one day find a cure for this horrible syndrome.
It is not too late to register for the AIDS walk. It is easy to register online at www.aidswalkwis.org or by calling 1-800-348-WALK. Once you register, you will be sent a pledge form that allows you to collect pledges from sponsors.
Even more convenient is the ability to send out official AIDS WALK WISCONSIN e-mails to your friends and family, asking for pledges. You do this on your personal AIDS WALK WISCONSIN website that you acquire after registration.
