With the release of Jailbreak 1.1.3, owners of the iPhone and iPod Touch are now able to run updated, home-brew software made readily available by countless Apple enthusiasts.

For those too afraid of destroying their iPod/Phone, rest assured that this isn’t a PC-driven piece of software and is extremely unlikely to crash.

In the event that something does go wrong, restoring the settings is easy, since only data can be lost and nothing more.

Some care should be taken to only install programs that have been proven to work on the iPod/iPhone. Keep in mind, however, that Apple frowns upon modding your iPod/Phone—but how can they expect you not to want to?

A simple Google search will provide you with many sites containing the Jailbreak software. Jailbreaking an iPod/Phone is quite easy; many videos on YouTube and online message boards provide step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

There are also videos and forums dedicated to helping those who have botched a Jailbreak and now potentially have a $400 paperweight on their hands.

The iPod Touch can now have the same features as the iPhone.

Applications that can be obtained are as diverse as an Internet radio, a pocket guitar, a multi-language dictionary, e-books—the list stretches on and on. All the software is freeware and is just as quickly found by doing various Google searches

While the ability to play games is somewhat lacking, there are emulators that allow a user to play NES, PSX and Gameboy Advance games. There are also standalone games that vary in quality and graphics.

The emulators work fine for on-the-go gaming, but they leave a user wanting more. It will only be a matter of time before someone within the Internet community figures out a way to emulate the Nintendo DS.

Jailbreak 1.1.3 takes the iPod/Phone media players that are limited to surfing the Internet, watching movies and listening to music, and turns them into hand-sized computers. With new updates being added daily, there is always something new to discover.

You can browse the Internet, run applications, watch movies, and do just about anything else you could on a computer, without all the hassle of lugging a laptop around. This is all thanks to hoards of anonymous Internet users everywhere that are a little tech savvy.
