It wasn’t amazing to the point where I was moaning with every bite, as I usually do when I am eating something heavenly, but the filling was creamy. Overall it was nice.
Cafe Luna and Lounge has a long way to go before they ever get the recognition they think they deserve in the Milwaukee market.
I wanted to love Luna. I honestly did. But when your server ignores you the first 15 minutes upon arrival and there are only five others in the place, you start to feel as if you are invisible to the staff and therefore not worthy of service.
After what seemed like decades, our server finally made her grand entrance toward our leather lounge seats and gave us the menu. I would compare the moment I opened the menu to the anticipated opening of King Tut’s tomb. (Archaeologists thought they were going to find Tut’s jewels and to their dismay, there was nothing.)
When I opened up Luna’s menu, I was expecting pages of dessert and yet, there was not much.
On the menu were such grocery store staples as Heath bar pie, chocolate pecan bourbon pie, carrot cake, coconut cream pie, vanilla ice cream and chocolate marble cake.
Maybe my expectations are too high, but come on, creativity would make this place boom with business. Instead, there was a small group of drunken people in their late forties dancing with the “jazz” band. More on that later.
I should note that Luna does offer martinis that some may find unique. Oatmeal Cookie and Banana Cream Pie are two of the martinis offered. There was a major flaw with the banana martini: no banana flavor. Yet when considering their extended champagne and sherry list, Luna doesn’t come up short on the alcoholic beverages.
My dining partner and I did have the pleasure of tasting the chocolate pecan bourbon pie. The crust was crisp and golden brown, and the slice was not petite by any means.

As far as I was concerned I could have closed my eyes and put my finger on a dessert and I really wouldn’t have cared what it was. There was nothing that jumped out or that I never had before. It was like a cliché American holiday: Every year the family is the same, the food is the same and the desserts are the same.
Needless to say, I ordered the coconut cream pie. I don’t have much to say about it. It was white, tasted of coconut cream and was boringly generic.
I called the cafe and lounge to see if they would be adding any more desserts to the menu any time soon. I was not surprised when the woman who answered the phone declared there would be cherry pie, Irish cream pie and a banana cake added the last week of January. This place has serious diversity issues and it’s extremely frustrating to witness.
Although I must admit that my dining partner and I were wildly entertained that Friday evening with a jazz band whose lead singer’s voice was reminiscent of Barry White circa 1972. It’s a great afterthought to have live music to help set the mood of a swanky downtown lounge.
But the Barry wannabe did go a little too far with his act when he decided to pull up a seat next to an obviously inebriated woman and serenade her with his own poetry while his band stood in confusion on the other end of the bar.
By this point, I had had enough of this circus, and it was time to go home. I’ll try Luna again this summer when they hopefully get their act together and provide outdoor seating. They have a wonderful location on the west side of the First Place Riverwalk at 106 W. Seeboth.
Cafe Luna and Lounge is a perfect place to go when you are looking for a classy night on the town and craving Sara-Lee-worthy dessert.
