SHAC sponsors free concert

We the Living will hit the stage in Channel

By Marlyn Fink

Start off the second semester right by checking out an up-and-coming band performing live in Channel this week.

We the Living, an indie rock band, will be putting on a show for residents on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. SHAC is sponsoring the show that will last around 45 minutes.

According to Caitlin Clark of the Student Housing Administrative Counsel (SHAC), the concert is free to all residents of Sandburg Hall. Residents may bring friends, as long as they are registered as guests and abide by University Housing policies.

We the Living out of Madison, Wis., consider their music to be indie, acoustic and rock. The band’s main influences are Coldplay, U2 and David Gray according to their MySpace page.

The band’s members, John Paul Roney, Benjamin Schaefer, Matt Holmen and Stefan Benkowski came up with their name, We the Living, from a shared fascination with philosophy.

Roney and Schafer established the band in Madison in fall 2006. Both musicians were previous members of The Profits, a successful touring act in the college market.

In 2006, bassist Benkowski and guitarist Holmen joined vocalist Roney and percussionist Schaefer, and We the Living was born. The band’s producer, Scott Austin has worked with such artists as Tyler Hilton and The Shore.

Currently, the band is on a club and college tour across the United States promoting their debut album Heights of the Heavens.

Clark mentioned that the band will be available for a meet and greet with residents after their concert. SHAC is working on getting another musical act for the spring semester, but they do not have anything else booked as of right now.

More information regarding the band is available on their MySpace page located at www.myspace.com/wetheliving.
