New year, new fare
Milwaukee’s offers up fresh dining hotspots
By Miranda Agee
Many of you probably frequent the god-awful new edition to Water Street, Sullivan’s. But does anyone remember what it used to be just a few of months ago? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that we were all cramming for finals and rushing to turn in papers and projects. I kept telling myself that after all my hard work this past semester I deserved lazy days on the couch eating stale Christmas cookies while Giada and Rachael taught me how to cook healthy in the New Year.
I can honestly say that I took my favorite ladies’ advice and cooked… a lot. So, needless to say I am itchin’ to get out on the town and retire my knife and saute pan for awhile.
There are some exciting new places that have opened up recently and I cannot wait to test the waters for you. From Milwaukee’s premiere dessert bar in Walker’s Point and the grand re-opening of one of my favorites, there is sure to be something to excite your palette. So let’s talk restaurants, my all time favorite topic.
I have been eagerly anticipating the opening of Café Luna, 106 W. Seeboth, Milwaukee’s first dessert bar located beautifully on the Riverwalk. Imagine sitting down at a table, opening up a menu and all you see are tempting cocktails and luscious desserts…that is pure bliss.
These types of digs are littered all across New York and Chicago but not many can say that they have live jazz several nights a week. Guys, if you are in the dog house with the lady, tell her to put on some pumps and get over to Luna. She’ll forget whatever it was that you did in the first place. Expect a detailed review very soon.
Edgar’s Calypso, 628 N. Water St., is a new edition to everyone’s favorite Water Street. Their cuisine is Caribbean and so is their décor. Just by driving by the place, you can see their brightly painted chairs and murals through the large picture windows.
They are open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner. Their cuisine is traditional with jerk chicken and pork, hot and sweet wings and plenty of margaritas to wash down the spices, including a chic champagne margarita—how good does that sound? Edgar’s has valet parking on Friday and Saturday nights for the astonishingly low price of $3 per car.
The ninth Alterra, 2999 Humboldt Blvd., has opened in the Milwaukee area. This one is the first in the trendy Riverwest area located on North Humboldt Boulevard. What can coffee addicts and muffin lovers expect at this new and highly anticipated location?
Well besides everyone’s personalized Alterra staples (mine are the bountiful garden muffin and minty green tea) they are introducing their Alterra bakery to the location. This means that the Riverwest location will house more bakery items that other locations will not have. Some items just do not travel as well as others. I cannot wait to check this one out; this Milwaukee girl adores her Alterra.

It was Milwaukee’s first small plate dining restaurant, Swig. I miss that menu so much it hurts. Well, good news has arrived and Swig is making a comeback, this time in a more suited and respected location: Broadway Avenue in the Third Ward.
I’m really hoping the beef tenderloin skewers and the spicy spinach and sun dried tomato gnocchi don the new menu. In any respect, Swig will be back in early spring and you can bet your bottom dollar I am already planning an outfit.
