Later in the meeting, a female student was removed from the meeting when she displayed a sign that read “Women Count.”
Sunday’s Student Assoication (SA) Senate meeting opened with Speaker Dan Bahr announcing that those attending the evening’s meeting would not be permitted to cross an orange tape line unless they were part of an SA branch. Bahr said this was to preserve order while the Senate discussed the Senate Finance Committee (SFC) decisions.
There was a campus police officer on hand for security in case the Senate gallery became unruly as the governing body discussed a funding issue that has raised controversy over the past few weeks. Later in the meeting, a female student was removed from the meeting when she displayed a sign that read “Women Count.”
The Senate agreed with the SFC’s allotment for Be On the Safe Side (BOSS), the Lesbian, Gay, Bi, and Transgender Resource Center, Neighborhood Housing, Senate Appropriations Committee, SA executive, SA legislation, University Legal Clinic, Student Court and UPASS with a 26-6 vote.
This includes an increase in BOSS budget on the agreement to extend BOSS hours 2 a.m. - 4 a.m. Friday through Sunday mornings. In addition, the LGBT center will be forced to cut the assistant director position.
The athletics budget will remain the same for the next school year with the stipulation that reports will be made about how the department will get itself out of debt. Also, the Athletic department will have to cut any professional jobs before being given the SFC funding.
Sen. Tyler Kristopeit stressed that SFC looked to maintain student jobs on campus.
The UPark budget quickly passed without debate by the Senate, giving $12.50 per student in segregated fees. However, there were a few requirements imposed on UPark before the program can receive the money. One is that bus riders will need to present an ID. Also, there will be no user fees put in place for next year.
Then the Senate approved the elimination of Waukesha and Kenosha UPark routes. In addition, the Senate approved the elimination of the winter, spring break and summer UPark services. The Senate added that the reserve limit for UPark is $150,000.
The Senate began to debate the Woman’s Resource Center, while the motion was to increase the allotment to $4.05, in order to save the assistant director’s position. However, the motion failed. The next motion was to decrease the allotment to $2.80, when SFC recommendation was $3.10.
