Dear UWM Post,

I would like to thank the Post for its recent article on the compassionate Care for Rape Victims bill (Volume 52, Issue 11).

The student organization VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood, which I represent, hosted a picture petition event on Oct. 17 to raise awareness of this issue. We asked passing students to allow their picture to be taken in an effort to influence legislation and increase public awareness of CCRV in Wisconsin.

Volunteers were asked to hold a sign showing their support for the bill, and then their photo was snapped. Their photos were later uploaded to a Flickr.com account. Those photos can be found at the Web site http://www.flickr.com/groups/ccrv/. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus collected 106 photos on Oct. 17. UW-Madison collected another 150 photos.

As the Post reported, “Eighty-two percent of Wisconsin voters said they supported ensuring access to emergency contraception for victims of rape and incest, according to an August 2004 survey by the CCRV coalition.” This is a huge segment of the population, and their voices need to be heard in Wisconsin.

More information on how to get involved with this important issue can be found on the Planned Parenthood Web site at http://www.ppawi.org/ccrv. Here you can find information about contacting your representative and how to volunteer directly with Planned Parenthood to help ensure this important bill finally becomes law.

To get involved on campus, contact VOX directly via e-mail at uwmvox@yahoo.com, or attend our next meeting Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. in Union Room 344. We love new faces!

Please help us make a difference in Wisconsin.

Sarah Shannon
