“It’s a service we wanted to provide for students since the phone lines were taken out of the rooms,” Van Lysal said. “It’s something we can do for the students for free.”

As many of you have noticed, new telephones have recently been installed by the entrance to the Emporium and in the lobby of Sandburg Hall. FreeFone is the name of the independent telephone company and they have partnered with University Housing to offer students free long distance calls.

This new resource can be very useful to those students who may not have a cell phone or are just trying to cut back on monthly minutes.

According to Liz Van Lysal of University Housing, the phones were installed due to the fact that phone lines were previously removed from each of the dorm rooms and currently, there are only phones in the lounge of each floor which do not make long distance calls without a calling card.

“It’s a service we wanted to provide for students since the phone lines were taken out of the rooms,” Van Lysal said. “It’s something we can do for the students for free.”

University Housing has an agreement with the company FreeFone and in addition to the two placed in Sandburg, there will be one at Kenilworth Square and one in the lobby of the new Riverwest dorms.

As the name implies, the phones are completely free of cost for students to make not only local calls, but calls throughout Wisconsin and Illinois as well. In addition, the FreeFones are available not only to students and residents of Sandburg, but to the general public as well.

The cost for the phones is supported by the advertising which appears on the screen as a phone call is being made.

Van Lysal also indicated that in the future University Housing will be placing their own advertising on the phones, including important information for students to remember. In addition, S.A.F.E. Initiative information will be on there also.

FreeFones offer students a completely free phone call to several area codes across Wisconsin and Illinois. So, if you are running low on minutes or you just happened to drop your phone on the sidewalk and it smashed into pieces, take advantage of this free service to the fullest extent, until your cell phone is fixed.
