Located off-campus, what will be the home for 488 students next semester offers a beautiful view of the river and the downtown Milwaukee skyline.
Construction of the RiverView Residence Hall is finally complete, and last minute touches will continue to be made before the opening date in January.
A walk-through tour of the dorms proves it is unique in comparison to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Sandburg Residence Halls on campus. Located off-campus, what will be the home for 488 students next semester offers a beautiful view of the river and the downtown Milwaukee skyline.
Scott Peak, director of University Housing, explained that staff will be using a punch list method, examining every inch of the building to make sure each scratch or defect is noted for repair during the next few months. Minor defects have already been noted. For example, there are currently some first floor windows covered with security screens that are rusting and will soon be replaced.
Inside the building, each floor holds a quiet study room. Since no computer lab is available, computers and printers will be placed within a few of these. There are also two social lounges on every floor, where students can enjoy the view, socialize and relax. Fitness equipment will be scattered among various lounges as well.
Residents can also reserve a kitchen for use. There is also a common dining area with a walk-through kitchen, similar to those in Sandburg. There is a patio on the third floor, with lockable, alarmed doors. The area is covered with tables, chairs and planters in a location that overlooks the river and a bike path accessible to students.
The dorms consist of three buildings, each floor attached to the building at its side by a hallway.
“The city plan had wanted three separate buildings to be open so people could get through to the river,” said Peak. But Peak said he stood firm arguing that the buildings should be connected to create a common security zone convenient for residents.
The residence hall is also different from Sandburg in that it provides a unique living situation for resident assistants. Rather than being connected to a suite, their rooms are separate and spacious. Suites consist of two double rooms, with walk-in closets and one bathroom to share.
Peak stated he “held tight for operative windows and air conditioning,” a feature only the east tower of Sandburg currently has.
Other unique features include the three multipurpose classrooms located in the building. Students who live in RiverView will be able to register for specific classes being held in the dorms. Faculty will also have offices located in the dorms. Those attending classes for Career Exploration, Information Technologies, Nursing, and Cultures and Communication will be able to walk from their room right down to class. 62 students will be able to reserve parking spots in the garage. They will be provided with their own permit and garage door opener.
