Several UWM students scrambled around the city of Milwaukee on Saturday morning as the second annual Amazing Race came to campus.

Twenty-two teams composed of between four and six students competed in the event, put on by the Student Association and the Green Room fitness center.

The Amazing Race, Milwaukee style, is a giant scavenger hunt requiring each team to explore the streets of Milwaukee from downtown all the way to Bayshore Town Center with clues indicating the places they are to stop at.

Prior to making it to each location, the teams received a puzzle piece, and the goal was to accumulate all 22 of the puzzle pieces in the fastest time.

The top five teams to finish all walked away with some valuable awards, and the first ten teams to finish were guaranteed prizes. In addition, all students who competed in the race were eligible to enter into a raffle to win door prizes.

The team that came in first place received an award package which included four iPod shuffles and two portable DVD players.

According to Noah Kaufman, a co-organizer of the Amazing Race, this year’s event expanded in all aspects; more businesses were involved, more teams competed, and the awards were bigger and better. Kaufman and Andy Wiesner, both employees of the Green Room, helped to plan and organize the race for over two months.

Last year’s Amazing Race was put on solely by University Housing and only residents of Sandburg and Purin Halls were eligible to enter the competition. This year it was open to any UWM student.

Some of the sponsors for the event included Chipotle, Adventure Rock, Pepsi, Ultimate Sun, and several other area businesses.

All in all, the Amazing Race was a fun and exciting time for everyone involved, even for teams that didn’t finish in the top five. It was a chance to explore Milwaukee and have fun with friends at the same time.

“The Amazing Race gives students a chance to know Milwaukee and to showcase what the Student Association does for students,” Kaufman said.
