I’m very disheartened by the approach taken with this “article” (“Laundry-lifting a bad idea,” Nov. 12). I have worked with University Housing in many positions over my entire career as a student and found that your article was not only misleading, but also showed a lacking sense of common decency that seems to be permeating our society.

Not only does the article make it sound as if stealing wasn’t a huge deal (“I never knew that stealing an item from another person’s laundry was taken so seriously...”) but the article also makes the assumption that it was University Housing that “really [came] down hard” on this thief. First of all, the ticket was issued by a Police officer, not University Housing officials. Even so, University Housing takes theft very seriously, as they should!

Perhaps the woman who was caught stealing didn’t think she would get caught (although University Housing safety cameras are easily visible throughout the buildings). Or perhaps she was caught up in the moment of doing something “wrong”.

Either way, she obviously knew what she was doing, and for that I believe the actions taken against her were nothing but just, especially when you think about the woman who owned the article of clothing that was stolen. Would you be arguing about the harshness of punishment if the woman had stolen a stereo or a piece of jewelry?

Perhaps the sweatpants stolen weren’t of much value, monetary or otherwise, but that doesn’t make the thief any less punishable.

What a wonderful way to honor the memory of Joe Munz (“Munz Scholarship keeps memory alive,” Nov. 12). I applaud your efforts to help make a difference and to remember Joe.

Hi I’m a freshman here at UWM. While some of Ron Paul’s ideas may seem fantastic, maybe it’s just your imagination that needs rebuffing to grasp how truly revolutionary this man’s ideas are (“Ron Paul not for president,” Nov. 12). I have no idea how these ideas will turn out, but the only way to find out is to implement them...I have read some of your other articles, so I believe I have some opinion on what your political views are--would these ideas not be hundreds of times better than what we currently have today? Would they not limit the president’s power, making him unable to torture and detain innocent people at his whim? I see Ron Paul as one of our ONLY hopes for this country...now I would normally call my self a Democrat, but that is just how much I believe in what this man is saying. I don’t want to vote for Hillary or Obama because no matter how much they deny it, I see striking similarities between them and the other Republicans...they say nothing about the Patriot Act or personal freedoms, so I’m assuming they will just keep going with the crap we have today. I mean, what the hell is that? To just think, the government could be looking at what I’m writing and my e-mails right now...where is liberty and freedom in THAT? This is not America as I want it; this country is slowly becoming a fascist nation, no matter how badly you or anyone else wants to deny it. This country needs a change, and the only way I see that happening is through Ron Paul.

Regarding the report in the UWM Post, (“City generates more than $20 million annually in parking tickets, Oct. 29) the availability of street parking continues to be an ongoing issue that interconnects with the issue of parking supply for UWM Students. For all students who use the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee UPARK Service, which is a very large segment of the student population, once again the Parking & Transit Office has attempted to find a way to raise our fees. Last year, they attempted to raise the segregated fee that students pay for the UPARK, to pay for interest debt payments on a campus parking ramp. That was successfully prevented by students on the finance committee last year. This year, the Parking & Transit Office put together a proposal through the recently created transportation committee, and in front of the Senate Finance Committee, to assess every student who uses the UPARK, such that we would have to pay a daily surcharge every day that we as a bus rider use the bus in the summer semester. For the majority of our UWM students who depend on taking the bus to school everyday, this is a ridiculous idea, and the finance committee seemed to come to the same conclusion. It is an obvious increase in our student dollars being taken out of our own pockets! The students on the committee have worked courageously to keep our costs from rising, and completed deliberations on Saturday, November 17th, apparently preventing the daily surcharge. However, any final decisions have to be ultimately approved by the Senate, and there is a question as to whether the current free of charge UPARK will be continued during the summer or not. So if you are a UPARK user I encourage you to take a moment and e-mail your student representatives at sa-all@uwm.edu and let them know if you depend on your UPARK service in the summer to come to school! This is already paid for in your segregated fee, so let your representatives know if you depend on this service! They represent you on these issues, and they appreciate your support.
