The Flicks Film Festival may not be the independent film making hub of the Midwest, but it’s a valiant place to showcase residents’ talents and possibly earn some coin in the process.
Milwaukee is annually renowned for playing host to an event known for its artistic and entertaining genius: the Milwaukee International Film Festival. This is due largely in part to new state legislations that provide tax incentives for film producers to make their movies in Wisconsin.
Therefore it only makes sense that now, for the first time in history, our very own University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is providing a launching pad for up-and-coming film makers/residents of Sandburg Halls, so that perhaps one day, they too can earn those tax credits.
Stand aside, MIFF. The Flicks Film Festival is coming soon. All submissions, which must be 3 to 20 minutes in length, contain no nudity, excessive vulgarity, racial slurs, other derogatory language or other qualities deemed inappropriate by the judges, will be narrowed down to six semi-finalists by a panel of five esteemed judges.
The criteria are basic and simple: originality, creativity, editing/style, cinematography and finally overall execution. On a scale of one to five (five being the best), points will be awarded and tallied to determine the best six films.
These six movies will be screened on the Nov. 12, voted on again by the judges and given additional points based on viewer’s choice. So any one who submitted a film should invite all of their friends (and their friend’s friends and so on and so forth), because the top accolade is a prize worth $200. The runner up prize approximates $150.
The Flicks Film Festival may not be the independent filmmaking hub of the Midwest, but it’s a valiant place to showcase residents’ talents and possibly earn some coin in the process.
