My lifelong dream of becoming a model finally came true, at least for a day. Well, sort of.
My diminutive height of 5 ft. 4 in., has kept me from this dream for years, but when Tom Miller, owner of the fabulous Beauty and Cutting Group salons, asked me to do a photo shoot to help him prepare for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony Style, I knew my time had come.
Beauty is providing the hair for the fashion show, with strict orders directly from Prabal Gurung, a designer for Bill Blass (the featured designer of Symphony Style this year) on how the style should look.

That’s where I come in. Tom needed a model to practice the look and to photograph the finished product so he can teach it to his team who will be helping with the show. I was instructed to bring several ‘70s inspired outfits with me so Tom could figure out how the hair will change depending on the feel of the outfit.
The whole shoot was a ton of fun. Tom worked on my hair for about an hour, and then his wife, a well-known makeup artist around town, did my makeup. Having my hair done was probably the least pleasant part of the entire day. I had nearly two pounds of product in my hair, which made it quite maneuverable, but also quite difficult to brush through, if you get my drift.
Once hair and makeup were finished, it was my turn to perform.
Now, although I dream of becoming a model, I actually do not know the first thing of modeling. It is easy to do the “model walk” when I have had too much to drink and really do not care who is watching, or to pose for my boyfriend when shopping together, but when placed in front of the camera, all those goofy moments became fleeting memories, and I just felt awkward.
Once I was able to loosen up (when I had on my last outfit), that is when all the Vogue poses came out, and I took my best pictures. I’m certainly no professional, in experience or height capability, but I think some of my pictures turned out pretty darn well.
I made my mom promise she would hang them in every room of my parents house. I also plan to have them printed and framed so everyone I know can expect one for Christmas.
Do not expect to see me on the cover of a magazine any time soon, but be sure to look for the pictures from the Symphony Style show, because ladies and gentlemen, you saw the hair here first.
