Five people have been hit by cars on campus so far this semester, which have resulted in arm and leg injuries and a chipped tooth, according to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Campus Police Department.
Of the five people struck by cars on campus, three were on foot and two were on bicycles, said Lt. James Learman of the campus police.
“Cars don’t slow down or stop when you’re crossing the street sometimes, they just go,” Cynthia Hwang, a UWM sophomore said. “Sometimes they even speed up so you can’t cross,” Hwang added.
Josh Shreiner, a UWM senior and criminal justice major, said he saw someone on a bike get hit by a car last year.
“There was a guy on a bike going through the crosswalk on Maryland who had the right of way, but a car turning left hit him and he had to brace himself on the hood,” Shreiner said.
Almost every student asked about cars hitting people on campus said they had either seen or almost been the victim of such an accident.
On Oct.18 at 4:18 p.m., a woman was walking in the crosswalk in front of Lubar Hall on Maryland Avenue and was hit by a driver who said he didn’t see her.
The woman received injuries to her right knee, ankle and thigh, and the driver was given a citation by Milwaukee police, Learman said.
Another pedestrian was struck on Oct. 28 at 2:30 a.m., when he and a group of people reportedly walked in front of a car on Prospect Avenue. The victim received injuries to his mouth including a chipped tooth, Learman said.
On Oct. 19 at 10:05 am, a man riding a bicycle eastbound on Kenwood Avenue injured his right arm when he swerved to miss a car infront of the daycare center, Learman said.
Another accident involving a car hitting a bicyclist occurred Oct. 23 at 9:00 pm on Kenwood and Downer. The bicyclist luckily wasn’t injured, but the front tire of his bike was damaged, Learman said.
