Ban on Internet access tax continues
The U.S. House of Representatives passed an act today prohibiting Internet users from being taxed for going online for the next seven years.

The Internet Tax Freedom Act of 2007, which is an extension of the 1998 act, was unanimously approved in the House.

If it had not been approved, users could have been taxed starting in November. The act, however, does not apply to states that had taxes before 1998.

Great Lakes water not for sale
Milwaukee will not sell water to communities outside of the Great Lakes basin until the Council of Great Lakes ratifies a compact protecting the region, stated a Milwaukee Public Works Committee resolution unanimously passed today.

The resolution will go to the full Common Council Nov.9 for final approval. The Council of Great Lakes includes eight state legislatures and two Canadian provinces.

Bus cash fare increases
In the new Milwaukee County budget, signed Nov.5, no Milwaukee County Transit System bus routes will be eliminated, but several will be shortened. The closest route to UWM that will be eliminated are Route 31 east of 10th Street downtown and Route 80 between Locust and Hopkins.

Cash fares will also increase from $1.75 to $2, but passes will stay the same.

MCTS receives Homeland Security grant
Doyle announced last week that the Milwaukee County Transit system will receive a $580,165 Homeland Security grant to fund terrorism prevention and response measures including employee training, public safety awareness campaigns and emergency response exercises. The funds will enhance the county’s ability to prevent and respond to acts of terrorism and address passenger safety concerns through advertisements on buses.
