Power outages not related
The two power outages this semester, Sept. 19 and Oct. 25, were not related, said Brian Manthey of We Energies. On Sept.19, a piece of equipment called a “pothead,” where energy transitions from underground to overhead, blew out near the intersection of 20th and Cornell. That cut off electricity sent to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
On Oct.25, a disturbance occurred likely on a line near the Milwaukee River going to UWM. Manthey said wildlife could have caused the problem.
Suspicious object found
Around 10:30 a.m. Friday police closed off the area around the Curtin Hall fountain, where a suspicious silver object was found. Police made an arrest, but details are unknown.
Bolton Hall evacuated
Bolton Hall was evacuated around 4:30 p.m. Oct.30 as officials investigated fumes in the building.
Campus police later confirmed that the leak in Bolton was not gas. It was exhaust fumes from the emergency generator run earlier that day.
Regent resigns due to budget immigration issues
Jesus Salas, a member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents since 2003, resigned Oct.26 to protest the lack of a state budget provision for tuition aid for undocumented workers’ children.
Salas blamed Gov.Doyle for not pushing harder to keep the student tuition remission provision in the budget, calling the failure "intolerable."

WHEG grant money freed by budget approval
Students awaiting Wisconsin Higher Education Grant money will soon be receiving their checks. Over 700 UWM students had been on a waiting list for access to the grant money, which was frozen as lawmakers hammered out a state budget.
The budget approved $50 million for the program to be available for the upcoming year, up from $43 million this past year. Applications will be available in January for next year. Students are encouraged to apply early, as the grant money is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
